Today's busy commuters often make calls on the road using a handheld phone which can cause physical impairments while driving. With the use of headsets, these drivers can continue to enjoy the convenience of talking on a cell phone in the car while keeping both hands on the wheel. Ontario's more than eight million licensed drivers should consider the following safety tips while using a headset and driving:
-- Practice Makes Perfect: Try using your phone and headset together
before you drive. Get to know the controls and adjust the fit. Check the
headset settings on your cell phone and store the phone in the car so it's
out of your way but still accessible.
-- Get Organized: Program all of your frequently called numbers into your
phone. That includes your office, your kids' school and your favorite
takeout restaurant. Don't forget about voice dialing; most phones have that
option, so use it as much as possible to avoid becoming distracted by
manual dialing while driving.
-- Set It Up: Just as you check your rearview mirror and buckle your
seatbelt before driving, put on your headset and make sure it's properly
connected to your phone.
-- Keep Your Eyes on the Road: Always remember that your first priority
is driving. You should only place and receive calls when it's absolutely
necessary.
