RALEIGH, N.C., Oct 19, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- COKE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Everyone knows recycling is good for the environment. And now, thanks to Coca-Cola, it can be good for your wallet, as well. If you live in Raleigh, and you recycle the right way, you can win a $50 Harris Teeter gift card!

North Carolina-based Coca-Cola Consolidated, the City of Raleigh, Harris Teeter and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources today announced a new partnership designed to increase recycling throughout the city. 'Recycle and Win' is a public/private initiative designed to educate residents on the correct ways to recycle.

The program will kick off Tuesday, November 3 and run for six months. The City is sending an educational mailer from Coca-Cola to all single-family households in Raleigh. The mailer features the Do's and Don'ts of recycling, along with an opportunity to win a $50 Harris Teeter gift card simply for recycling and making sure you are recycling the right way! The educational mailer contains a sticker, which residents should place on their green recycling bins in order to win.

"The beauty of this program is its simplicity," said Fred Battle, Executive Director of Raleigh's Solid Waste Department. "All residents have to do is place the weather-resistant sticker provided by Coca-Cola on their recycling bin, place the recycling bin with the sticker facing the street, and recycle materials properly. If the Coca-Cola Recycling Prize Patrol spots their stickered bin, they could win a $50 Harris Teeter gift card."

Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker said, "This is an exciting partnership that can really make a difference in reducing the amount of waste material going to the landfill. As our community continues to grow, we need innovative solutions such as the Recycle and Win program to promote environmental sustainability. This helps save the environment as well as tax dollars."

"Initiatives like 'Recycle and Win' are very important to our efforts to grow the state's recycling economy and to create jobs related to the recovery of materials," said Scott Mouw, State Recycling Director with North Carolina's Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance. "We are excited to see this program develop and want to recognize Coca-Cola, Harris Teeter and the City of Raleigh for their leadership."

"Coca-Cola is proud to sponsor this exciting initiative," said Lauren Steele, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated. "We want to make recycling a rewarding experience, and what better way to encourage people to recycle than by giving them an opportunity to be a winner! This fits well with the Coca-Cola Live Positively platform." Steele, a long-time proponent of recycling, says Recycle and Win will make Raleigh's already excellent curbside recycling program even better. "With so many people moving to Raleigh over the last decade, it's important to educate new residents and remind all the others how to recycle properly," he said.

The Coca-Cola Prize Patrol will be visiting Raleigh neighborhoods starting in early November and plans to award (10) $50 Harris Teeter Gift Cards per week for a total of 260 prizes throughout the six-month program.

"Programs like 'Recycle and Win' are instrumental in building positive recycling habits, and are just a part of our efforts to promote recycling," said Rod Antolock, Executive Vice President of Operations and Merchandising for Harris Teeter. "We recently installed recycling bins designed for bottles and cans in the lobbies of each of our stores. These bins are in addition to the plastic and paper bag recycling bins currently at each Harris Teeter location. Now, if a customer enjoys a bottle or canned beverage during a shopping trip, we encourage them to take advantage of our new in-store recycling program."

Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated is the second largest Coca-Cola Bottler in the United States. The Company is a leader in the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of soft drinks.
