Scott Mitchell, 40, who used to sell paint for Sherwin-Williams, decided just over a year ago to purchase a CertaPro Painters franchise.
"It was kind of the next step for me -- both personally and professionally," Mitchell said, adding he's been working in the paint business for the past 17 years.
Mitchell said he had a great job at Sherwin-Williams, but was compelled to take the risk.
"It was just kind of time to make a change," Mitchell said, adding he surprised many of his former co-workers, but they were all supportive.
Mitchell said he decided to buy the franchise, which has been successful for the past decade, last summer while reviewing accounts at a mid-year planning session. He added he had sold paint to the business and knew the owner, who he called in August.
"Business was doing great for six years," Mitchell said. Then "it was plateauing or even slipping."
Mitchell said he spent a few months organizing his finances, including using some of his investments, and by January he had bought the painting business and was fully trained by CertaPro, which is based in Philadelphia, Pa., and has made the transition easier.
"CertaPro has created the wheel. I just have to push it," Mitchell said, adding the biggest challenge is managing time well.
Mitchell said it's been a change for his wife Dee, who works as a Realtor, and their children Matthew, 13, and Seth, 11. He's added he's had to put in long days, but has also had more time to go camping and on field trips with his sons.
"Because it's a new business, cash flow is tight, but it's not non-existent," Mitchell said, adding he expects to be in the black by the end of the year.
Mitchell said most of his business is done in the Dover area, but he serves the Seacoast and works into Alton, Wolfeboro and the southern tip of the Lakes Region.
"It's a lot of work, but it's an investment," Mitchell said, adding he's grateful that his wife helps out with the logistical side of the business.
"She's got a vested interest in it," Mitchell said.
