Under the proposed ordinance, Rural/Metro will negotiate individually with businesses in Forks of the River's fire district for fire protection.
About a dozen businesses out of 54 in the East Knox County industrial park have pushed for such a measure, saying they want to negotiate their own contracts for fire protection.
Rural/Metro's contract to serve the fire district expired earlier this year, and the fire department was the low bidder for a new three-year contract totaling $807,206.
Some Forks of the River Industrial Park businesses voiced concern that the new contract would force an increase in their property taxes. Rural/Metro later agreed to reduce the contract amount by about $180,000, which would have lowered the fire tax from 23 cents to 17 cents on each $100 of assessed property.
But some of the industrial park businesses persisted in their opposition and called for Rural/Metro to negotiate individual fire protection contracts. That opposition prompted a meeting between county officials and Rural/Metro to work out a solution.
"Rural/Metro don't want it," said John Mills, who represents Rural/Metro. "There was a meeting and most of them decided this is what they wanted to do. We decided to go along. You don't want to be involved in a squabble."
Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale and Knoxville lawyer John Valliant, who represents businesses in Forks of the River Industrial Park recently held a meeting with Rural Metro officials to work out a fire protection agreement inside the park.
Asked if Rural/Metro's station in Forks of the River Industrial Park will close, Mills said that would depend on how much revenue Rural/Metro makes from the individual contracts.
If the Forks of the River station closes, the district would be served by Rural/Metro's Strawberry Plains fire station, Rural/Metro officials have said.
