Albemarle wins YVC title with 19th straight victory

Oct 19, 2009 (The Stanly News and Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- YDVL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Albemarle volleyball team claimed the 2009 Yadkin Valley Conference regular season championship with a perfect 16-0 record including a 3-0 win over Chatham Central on Thursday night.

Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-13 and 25-23.

Gabrielle Lowder led the Bulldogs (19-1, 16-0) with 12 kills and nine digs, while Mariah Lowder added 11 kills, 10 digs and four service aces.

Paige McConologue led Albemarle with 15 digs to go along with five kills. Samantha Braunsberg had 28 assists along with two kills and two aces for Albemarle.

The first two sets were routine for the Bulldogs, but Albemarle found themselves down 23-18 and rallied to for seven straight points to win the match.

Albemarle's win was their 19th straight victory after losing a non-conference match at Mt. Pleasant in the first game of the season.

In the run of their 19 wins, the Bulldogs have won 56 of 57 sets, the lone loss coming in a 3-1 win over second-place West Montgomery earlier this past week.

This week will be a busy one for all the volleyball teams in the Yadkin Valley as the conference opens Monday night at 6.

Top-seed Albemarle will host #8 North Rowan while #4 South Stanly will be at home against #5 Chatham Central.

The winner of those games will play Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at West Montgomery.

On the other side of the bracket, #2-seeded West Montgomery will host the seven-seed, East Montgomery, and #3 North Moore will host the #6-seeded Gray Stone Knights.

Winners of that bracket will play on Tuesday evening at 5 at West Montgomery.

The championship finals of the Yadkin Valley Conference tournament will be held on Wednesday evening at 6 at West Montgomery.

The NCHSAA state volleyball tournament will begin on Sat., Oct. 24.
