Two Ex-Militant Leaders Threaten to Blow Up Shell Gas Plant

Warri, Oct 20, 2009 (Vanguard/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- RD | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- TWO ex-militants leaders of Urhobo stock have threatened to blow up the Shell Petroleum Development Company's operated Utorogun Gas Plant at Ughelli in Ughelli South local government area of the Delta State, following complaints of neglect, discrimination and marginalisation by the federal and Delta State governments.

The civilian generals are Wilson Gbaire of Wilson Camp at Owhawha and Figbele Joseph of Figbele Camp in Orere Creek, both in Ughelli South local government, who alleged that President Umaru Yar'Adua has employed favoritism in his approach to the post-amnesty programme.

They wondered why the president did not invite them to the series of meetings he has held with some militant leaders in the region, adding "even though we have hierarchy, some of us that are commanders are to be part of the discussions on the way forward in the Niger Delta".

Addressing newsmen in Warri, along with some of their foot soldiers to express their anger with the development, they stated that since they embraced the amnesty by surrendering their arms, they were yet to meet with any government official.

This, they argued, was against the outcome of a meeting held with the representative of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr. Timi Alaibe, at Mciver hotels in Effurun last month.

"The president is not been fair to us. We embraced amnesty because of the promise by the Federal Government and Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan. But now they have been inviting some other ex-militant leaders to Abuja without us".

"They also promised to pay us some money for the weapons we turned in as well as houses in Abuja, but up till now they have not fulfilled that.

"They should realize that since we embraced the amnesty offer, the Utorogun Gas Plant has been operating without any hitch. We might not be able to continue to guarantee the security of the facility and other federal establishments in our area," they added.

The former warlords commended Governor Uduaghan for his effort in ensuring the success of the amnesty programme in the state, but urged him to open a line of communication with him.
