Atlantic American Corp. Leads Monday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Rises 1.12%

OLDWICK, N.J., Oct 20, 2009 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- AAME | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Monday, Oct. 19, at 837.21 (+1.12%). All 15 A.M. Best stock indexes rose. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were Atlantic American Corp. (+14.58%) and Phoenix Cos. (+5.53%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Qatar General Ins & Re Co. (-8.75%) and Gainsco (-4.74%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Insurance Brokers Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 962.05 (+1.35%). Leading the AMBEUR were Mapfre S.A. (+3.92%) and ING Groep N.V. (+2.95%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Lancashire (-2.00%) and Aviva (-1.51%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1156.58 (+2.00%). Leading the AMBAP were LIG Insurance Co. (+4.01%) and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (+3.70%). Trailing the AMBAP were Qatar General Ins & Re Co. (-8.75%) and Korean Reinsurance Co. (-1.69%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1011.17 (+1.11%). Leading the AMBGR were Mapfre S.A. (+3.92%) and ING Groep N.V. (+2.95%). Trailing the AMBGR were Korean Reinsurance Co. (-1.69%) and Central Reinsurance Co. (-1.43%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 1037.16 (+0.26%). Leading the AMBGB were AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (+5.27%) and National Financial Partners (+2.99%). Trailing the AMBGB were eHealth Inc. (-2.61%) and Advance Create Co. (-1.57%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 660.71 (+1.17%). Leading the AMBGML were Atlantic American Corp. (+14.58%) and Assurant (+3.07%). Trailing the AMBGML were AIG (-4.70%) and First Acceptance Corp. (-2.79%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 1065.08 (+0.93%). Leading the AMBGNL were 21st Century Holding Co. (+4.78%) and American Safety Insurance Holdings (+4.63%). Trailing the AMBGNL were Qatar General Ins & Re Co. (-8.75%) and Gainsco (-4.74%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 790.04 (+1.36%). Leading the AMBGL were Phoenix Cos. (+5.53%) and FBL Financial Group (+4.52%). Trailing the AMBGL were Investors Heritage Capital Co. (-3.38%) and Industrial Alliance Ins. & FS (-2.33%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1074.36 (+0.63%). Leading the AMBUPC were 21st Century Holding Co. (+4.78%) and American Safety Insurance Holdings (+4.63%). Trailing the AMBUPC were Gainsco (-4.74%) and CRM Holdings (-3.77%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 205.92 (+0.49%). Leading the AMBUML were Atlantic American Corp. (+14.58%) and Assurant (+3.07%). Trailing the AMBUML were AIG (-4.70%) and Hartford Financial Services Group (+0.22%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 839.23 (+1.47%). Leading the AMBUL were Phoenix Cos. (+5.53%) and FBL Financial Group (+4.52%). Trailing the AMBUL were Investors Heritage Capital Co. (-3.38%) and Sun Life Financial (-0.66%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 818.68 (+1.35%). Leading the AMBULH were Phoenix Cos. (+5.53%) and FBL Financial Group (+4.52%). Trailing the AMBULH were Investors Heritage Capital Co. (-3.38%) and Sun Life Financial (-0.66%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 787.71 (+1.20%). Leading the AMBUH were Universal American (+3.91%) and Unum Group (+2.94%). Trailing the AMBUH were WellPoint (-0.65%) and Amerigroup (-0.53%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 945.49 (+0.23%). Leading the AMBUB were AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (+5.27%) and National Financial Partners (+2.99%). Trailing the AMBUB were eHealth Inc. (-2.61%) and Life Partners (-0.92%).
