The firm's Applause rose, which incorporates a blue gene from pansies, has a light purple hue. But it is the first rose in the world to feature nearly 100 per cent blue pigment in the petals, Suntory says.
The rose goes on sale November 3 in the greater Tokyo and Osaka areas, as well as Aichi Prefecture, according to the company's announcement Tuesday.
A single blue rose is expected to sell for 2,000 yen to 3,000 yen, about 10 times the price of conventional ones. Prices will be lowered as production increases. Suntory envisions purchases for such special occasions as wedding anniversaries and birthdays. The company is targeting sales of 200,000 Applause roses in 2011.
