Contributions for the official start of the 14th Annual Shop With a Cop a program totaled $6,301.
"The best we've ever had," said Sheriff's Lt. Allen Carter, who helps organize the Christmas-period shopping day with Kmart. Law enforcement and other emergency services workers chaperone youngsters through the store on shopping day, which this year is Saturday, Dec. 5. Each child is given a shopping card, usually valued at $25 a card as result of donations from individuals and corporate sponsors.
More than $2,000 had been collected since early September. Tuesday, checks and cash brought to Kmart hiked the total well over last year's first-day bank of $2,550.
There have been 27 donations for this year's program, including those previously reported. Last year's first-day report was 15.
"I'd like to thank all the corporations," Carter said. "We've got a bunch."
Brett Jenkins, of Solitaire Homes, donated $1,500.
There were individual donations -- $100 from Sheriff Raymond Cobos and his wife, Barbara, an amount Columbus Police Chief Angelo Vega challenged Cobos to make $120. Cobos accepted. Kmart Assistant Manager Sam Keels added $100. Dona Irwin, Velva Hurt and LCSO Deputy Dan Hoolan made contributions. Tony Anderson, chief of the Florida Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, contributed $1,000 last week.
Other contributions made or reported Tuesday were from D and M Sporting Goods, First New Mexico Bank, Ray's United, Divine Dentistry, the LCSO Narcotics Fund, E and M Auto Repairs, Jimmy's RV Repair, Cervantes Road Service, Diaz Farms, Rocky Mountain Transportation, Customs and Border Protection agents, Amigo's, El Camino Restaurant, Mimbres Valley Title and Abstract, Knights of Columbus, Tony Viramontes Disabled American Veterans, Lisa Sciana (New York Life), Donald Matthews and Tom and Linda Lindsay and Jack and Sylvia Coussons.
"The Headlight" and KOTS/KDEM Radio are also annual sponsors.
This year's goal is again to provide 350 youngsters with a $25 shopping card each. A yard sale is set Nov. 14, outside Kmart, to raise funds.
Last year, contributions neared $12,000 and 332 of a registered 350 children arrived to roam the Kmart aisles on a December morning, selecting toys, clothes, sporting goods, food and electronic items. Youngsters are selected to shop by their respective schools. Kmart and Deming Public Schools personnel help register youngsters as they enter the store.
Santa Claus usually arrives at Kmart in a Deming Fire Department truck, greeted by waiting children at about 8 a.m.
There's a new manager at Kmart -- Mike Callagy, recently arrived from Arizona. Tuesday was his second day at the store. His other assistant is Mike DeLaTorre.
Call the LCSO, at (575) 546-2655, to arrange to make a donation.
