Massachusetts-based Kronos, which produces time-and-attendance software for businesses, issued pink slips to the local workers on Oct. 14, when it finalized its buyout of rival Stromberg, the records show.
Kronos acknowledged it failed to give the workers proper advance notice, but would provide each worker 60 days pay and benefits in lieu of the notice, the company said in a letter to the state's Agency for Workforce Innovation.
Another 25 workers are expected to be dismissed early next year when the shutdown will be completed, Alyce Moore, a Kronos vice president, said in the letter.
Kronos would say little this week about the action, which has already dismissed 75 percent of the former Stromberg work force. Instead, it released a statement that downplayed the extent of the layoff.
"We retained a significant portion of the Stromberg workforce that was focused on professional services, product support and engineering," the company said in a written statement.
Kronos and Stromberg have been competitors in the market for automated systems for payroll, employee management and other services that help companies cut costs and operate efficiently.
Kronos acquired Lake Mary-based Stromberg from Paychex Inc. last week. Financial terms were not disclosed. Stromberg had been a subsidiary of Rochester, N.Y.-based Paychex for the past five years.
Paychex, a payroll, business services and human resources outsourcing company, said it sold Stromberg as part of refocusing its business model. Paychex produces time-and-attendance software for small business clients, while Stromberg focuses on larger companies.
