BRIEF: Intermet to close Radford foundry

Oct 21, 2009 (The Roanoke Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- INMTQ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Intermet will close its New River Foundry in Radford Dec. 12 and dismiss its remaining 76 workers, said Eddie Lowery, the Roanoke-based subdistrict director for the United Steelworkers International.

Lowery said he received a letter from a company human resources official, Doug Howell, which stated, "The entire New River Foundry will be closed and layoffs are expected to be permanent."

Lowery said union records show the plant employed 259 at one time. It most recently produced such items as differential cases and brake calipers for the automotive industry, he said.

"We're deeply distressed that another manufacturing plant is falling off line because of the current state of the economics in this country," Lowery said.
