BRIEF: Expedia to close Tacoma call center
EXPE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Online travel company Expedia Inc. announced Wednesday it will close its Tacoma call center by the end of the year. Some workers said they were laid off on Wednesday.
The company plans to transfer some of the work from the Tacoma office to Las Vegas. An unspecified number of workers in Tacoma will be offered jobs at the Las Vegas center or Expedia's Bellevue headquarters, the company said.
Expedia didn't say why it is closing the Tacoma center, one of four in the country. It did issue a general explanation: "In making the decision to grow the Las Vegas location and close the Tacoma location, Expedia concluded that these geographic changes in its call center footprint would enable the company to most effectively serve its customers and address its evolving business needs."
"Expedia is providing support to any employees transitioning out of the company," the company said in a news release.
In 2004, the company said it had about 200 employees in the Tacoma call center.
