Biopack has been successfully manufacturing sustainable packaging for the retail and fresh food sectors for more than a decade. Although the company's products were ideally suited to handle the temperature ranges (hot and cold), some trays required longer term moisture and grease resistance to be viable for retail sectors such as ready-made meals and baked goods. This left sizable market segments without a true viable sustainable packaging alternative to offer to consumers other than the markedly less environmentally friendly plastic and metal containers that are so prevalent in today's market place. Previous moisture resistant applications tested over the last several years by Biopack's R&D department proved to either be too ineffective, too costly or not up to the high environmental standards that the company wishes to maintain.
Approximately six months ago, Biopack initiated a program to work with a water based spray coating technique for its trays that would provide the necessary moisture resistance and barrier properties, while retaining all of the other desirable product attributes, including compostability and biodegradability. Biopack is now ready to begin accepting orders for its coated tray products and believes this can lead to a significant market advantage. The coating is FDA compliant, CFIA compliant, and BfR Food Contact Regulation compliant. Initial interest is strong and growing as customers in these large market segments continue to seek sustainable solutions to their packaging needs. Biopack will continue to explore and refine uses for this exciting product, potentially leading to different applications for the new and upcoming challenges in the green packaging industry.
"We recognized the potential for coated applications on our trays some time ago, as multiple customers had approached Biopack and informed us about the need for and lack of a solution for eco-friendly fiber trays with moisture barrier properties. We were unhappy with the existing films and laminates that we found and tested out in the marketplace," commented Gerald Lau, Biopack's CEO. "After a lot of trial and error, we feel we have found an excellent solution that spans multiple verticals and this is being validated by the quantity of inquiries we are receiving from these customers. Biopack will continue to always strive to be a leader through innovation in the sustainable packaging market."
