TOSHIBA TO RELEASE PORTABLE FUEL CELL FOR ELECTRONIC DEVICES
TOKYO - Toshiba Corp. (TSE:6502) said Thursday that it will introduce a portable fuel cell for powering mobile electronics devices, the first such offering by a major manufacturer.
The Dynario is to go on sale next Thursday. Toshiba intends to sell just 3,000 units through its Web site to gauge demand.
JAPAN HOYA'S JULY-SEPT PROFIT SEEN UP 60% FROM PRIOR QUARTER
TOKYO - Japan's Hoya Corp. (TSE:7741) is likely to report around 15 billion yen (US$164 million) in group operating profit for the July-September period, a 60 per cent jump from the April-June quarter thanks to strong sales of hard-disk drive materials.
Revenue is seen climbing 10 per cent to 103 billion yen. Glass substrates for hard-disk drives remain at full production amid higher demand, and yields are improving. Sales of other key products, such as semiconductor manufacturing materials and digital camera lenses, likely topped earlier forecasts.
GUNZE DEVISES INDUSTRY'S LARGEST STATIC-CAPACITANCE TOUCH PANEL
TOKYO - Japan's Gunze Ltd. (TSE:3002) has developed a static-capacitance touch panel with a 15-inch screen, the industry's largest.
The touch panel is built on a plastic substrate, which is less expensive than glass, and can be manipulated by two people at the same time.
CHINESE HOME APPLIANCE GIANT HAIER'S NET PROFIT UP 49% IN 3Q
BEIJING - Qingdao Haier Co., Ltd. (SSE:600690), a leading Chinese household electric appliance producer, announced Thursday evening that its net profit in the third quarter rose 48.88 per cent year on year to 300.7 million yuan (US$44.03 million).
Its net profit in the first three quarters increased 28.7 per cent from a year earlier to 966.4 million yuan, the firm said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
JAPAN TV SHIPMENTS GET BOOST FROM ECO-POINTS, CELL PHONES SLUMP
TOKYO - Although domestic shipments of flat-panel televisions have been rising in Japan thanks to a government program to promote purchases of environmentally friendly appliances, shipments of cellular phones continue to fall.
Domestic cell phone shipments fell 14 per cent on the year to 17.04 million units during the April-September period, according to figures released Thursday by the MM Research Institute. And with consumers keeping their handsets longer, the market is not expected to make a dramatic recovery.
GARMIN, INDIA'S RELIANCE RETAIL TIE UP TO LAUNCH SATNAV PRODUCTS
NEW DELHI - Global satellite navigation device maker Garmin said it has entered into a tie-up with Reliance Retail to launch its car navigation products in India.
Under the agreement, Reliance Retail's automotive arm Reliance Autozone would market the products at its speciality stores and shop-in-shops across the country, Garmin said in a statement Thursday.
S.KOREAN CO TO EXPORT 38,000 ELECTRIC CARS WORTH $400 MLN
SEOUL - CT&T, a South Korean electric vehicle maker, has signed contracts at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show in Japan to export 38,000 electric cars worth US$400 million, the company said Thursday.
Of the total, 7,000 cars will go to 2AM Group of the U.S., while MVP EV Group and EVI Group, also from the U.S., will take 5,000 each. R
TOSHIBA JSW TO GET US$90 MN LOAN LOAN FOR INDIAN FACILITY
NEW DELHI - Electronic equipment maker Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator today said it has entered into an agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for a US$90 million loan (Rs 420 crore) for financing its upcoming Indian facility in Chennai.
The Chennai plant would go on stream in early 2011 and would manufacture mid to large size steam turbines and generators, the company said in a statement.
S KOREA'S LG INNOTEX TO SPEND US$966.4 MLN ON LED BIZ
SEOUL - LG Innotek Co. (KSE:011070), an electronics parts unit of South Korea's LG Group, said Thursday it has decided to invest 1.15 trillion won (US$966.4 million) in its light emitting diode (LED) business by the end of next year.
The investment will be used to purchase land and expand its plant in Paju, north of Seoul, which will help it prepare for the quickly growing demand for LEDs, said the company in a regulatory filing.
