Despite the fact that SOA has been around for at least a decade in one form or another, there is a surprising amount of confusion about what SOA is and how enterprises can benefit from it. In particular, SOA is often viewed as purely a technical issue when, in fact, its purpose is to improve the enterprise's ability to achieve its business goals and is the foundational path to Cloud computing. The Manifesto was created to bring clarity and understanding to this situation, to distill the essence of the SOA concept and its role in facilitating the enterprise's pursuit of its business goals as a means of bringing clarity to what is, today, an often muddy situation.
The members of the team developing the manifesto collaborated closely in developing the Manifesto. Despite the diversity of backgrounds, there was a refreshing unanimity in identifying the ambitions, values, and principles of SOA. The team worked hard to develop wording to concisely capture the essence of the points, with pretty much all participants contributing in equal measure.
