The PTN was built by the China-based flagship arm of Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), namely, Alcatel Lucent Shanghai Bell, which started its PTN's TD-SCDMA network testing inside the laboratory in July 2008 and outside the lab later. By far, the subsidiary has completed the PTN installment and debugging in Taiyuan.
The PTN is characterized by its adoption of the time-of-day (TOD) interfaces, the first type of clock accounting interfaces compatible with China Mobile's technological standards. An executive of Alcatel Lucent Shanghai Bell said that the PTN could help realize high-precision network synchronization and clear the limits imposed by GPS receiving systems on base stations.
In addition, China Mobile has also sent the bidding documents for PTN procurement to six other telecoms equipment providers like Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and ZTE Corporation (SZSE: 000063 and SEHK: 0763).
