Rep. Halvorson Secures Funding for Green Energy and Green Jobs
GEYC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- In another step to create green jobs and make Illinois more energy efficient, Rep. Debbie Halvorson's effort to secure $1 million in funding for the City of Peru for a wind turbine to promote green jobs and $250,000 for a Heartland Community College sustainability program was approved by the House and Senate recently and will next go to the President's desk for his signature.
"This funding shows how serious Illinois is in our efforts to become a true leader in green energy and in creating green jobs," said Halvorson. "It is American innovation and ingenuity, created right here in Illinois, that will generate jobs that can't be outsourced and energy that won't pollute our water and air."
The funding, secured through the bipartisan Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act passed by Congress on October 15th will provide $1 million towards the construction of a 2.5 megawatt wind turbine in Peru, IL that will reduce our dependency on foreign energy sources, and create long-term jobs and economic investment for our communities.
"It's been great to work with Congresswoman Halvorson to bring these much needed resources to our city," said Mayor Scott Harl of Peru, IL.
"The City of Peru has always been dedicated to providing its residents with clean, renewable, and reliable energy," said Jim Potthoff, of the City of Peru Electric Department. "Congresswoman Halvorson worked with the City of Peru to deliver the funding we needed to move forward on a project that will help create jobs and be a great benefit to the city."
Additional funding includes $250,000 for the Illinois Community College Sustainability Network (ICCSN), a program that will provide communities across Illinois with education and expertise on implementing green solutions and sustainable technologies. Administered by Heartland Community College in Normal, IL, the program will bring cutting-edge solutions to local communities to lower energy costs and protect their environment.
"We're very excited to have received this funding," said Jonathan Astroth President of Heartland Community College. "The potential with what we can do, to help educate colleges and communities across the country become greener, is limitless. I'm glad to have worked with Congresswoman Halvorson to have achieved this."
"I'm proud to be able to support efforts right here in Illinois to build a better future for our families," said Halvorson. "This funding will go a long way in making our jobs, communities, and environment a little greener."
