U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner to Attend apec Meeting
of Finance Ministers in singapore, november 12, 2009
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of the Treasury today announced that Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner will travel to Singapore to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Meeting of Finance Ministers on November 12, 2009. The Secretary will meet with Finance Ministers to discuss a range of issues related to the global economic crisis, trade finance, public-private models for the development of large-scale infrastructure projects and capital market development. Secretary Geithner will also discuss with his colleagues the importance of policy measures to ensure new sources of domestic demand growth in order to bring about strong, sustainable, and balanced global growth. Additional details regarding Secretary Geithner's schedule will be available in the weeks ahead.
Travel arrangements and hotel accommodations will be the responsibility of each media organization. Suggested date of departure is Tuesday, November 10, 2009, with a return of Friday, November 13, 2009. The Office of Public Affairs, in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy in Singapore, may be able to assist with hotel accommodations for a limited number of journalists. This year's meeting marks the 20th anniversary of APEC. The APEC forum was established in 1989 in recognition of the growing inter-dependence of Asia-Pacific economies. That year, 12 Asia-Pacific economies met in Canberra, Australia to establish APEC. Today, APEC has 21 member economies: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, The Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, The United States, Viet Nam.
