Tribe pays back Dukes, wins 24-3

Oct 25, 2009 (Daily Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- JMLCA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- As he studied the final box score, Adrian Tracy's eyes widened.

Was he impressed with his eight tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and 2 1/2 tackles for loss? Maybe he was pleased with the mere 216 yards of offense his William and Mary defense surrendered? Or was Tracy, the Tribe's stalwart senior defensive end, just basking in Saturday's final score -- William and Mary 24, James Madison 3 -- and in his first win against the Dukes?

None of the above.

"I was just looking at Grimes," Tracy said. "I saw he had 158. Sheesh!"

Tribe sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association offensive rookie of the year, rushed for a career-high 158 yards, including the game-clinching 9-yard touchdown, as No. 5 William and Mary (6-1, 3-1 CAA) snapped a five-game losing streak against JMU (2-5, 0-4) with its biggest win over the Dukes since 1979.

Grimes came into the game averaging a more-than-respectable 80.5 rushing yards per game but had yet to top 100 -- though he'd come close. He had 98 yards against Delaware on Sept. 26, 95 the next week at Villanova and 91 at Northeastern on Oct. 10, the Tribe's last game before its bye week.

"It feels good -- for the team, for everybody. It feels good," said Grimes, now averaging 91.6 yards of total offense. "The O-line was happy they got me over 100. They were like, 'We're going to get you over 100 today, Grimes.'"

With the Tribe up 10-3 after a sluggish first half, W&M coach Jimmye Laycock issued a locker-room edict.

"I really just said we're going to go with the running game and get that going," Laycock said. "We were trying to throw it around a little bit and do some stuff, (and) then we just said, in the second half, let's go pound it."

Grimes provided the first half's lone big play with a 61-yard burst off left tackle that led to R.J. Archer's 9-yard touchdown pass to tight end Rob Varno with 3:26 left in the first quarter. That score came off Archer's picture-perfect play-action fake to Grimes in the backfield.

"If I can hand it to this guy and let him do all the work, that's fine with me," said Archer, who was 15-of-22 for 127 yards and a first-drive interception when he was hit as he threw a wobbly pass up for grabs. "I just try to be efficient, don't turn the ball over, and let the defense and the running game take care of it."

Archer's scrambling set up Brian Pate's 34-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to extend a 7-3 William and Mary lead to a touchdown, and the Tribe went up 17-3 when Archer's 18-yard TD to tight end Alex Gottlieb capped a 14-play, 80-yard drive with 3:41 to play in the third quarter.

The Dukes tried to answer in the fourth, driving to the William and Mary 45, but Griff Yancey fumbled the ball directly into Marcus Hyde's arms to give the Tribe the ball back with 9:03 to play. Eight plays later, Grimes jogged untouched into the end zone for a 9-yard score to slam the door on the Dukes, who hadn't lost to William and Mary since Nov. 13, 2004.

"No one our team has beat JMU, so that was huge," Grimes said.

With 385 yards of offense, the Tribe outgained the Dukes by 169. Redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Thorpe had 76 of JMU's 150 rushing yards -- the most given up by the Tribe, which came into the afternoon giving up just 64.8 yards on the ground per game, second-best in the nation -- but was just 7-of-17 for 66 yards through the air and was sacked three times.

"As good as we've been on offense ... to all of a sudden run into this brick wall -- the frustration level is too hard to put into words," JMU coach Mickey Matthews said.
