Oct 25, 2009 (Daily Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- JMLCA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- It's a dilemma any quarterback would be happy to have.

William and Mary senior QB R.J. Archer completed 15 passes to seven players in Saturday's 24-3 victory against James Madison, just two of whom are listed as wide receivers. Seven of the catches, including Archer's two touchdown throws, were made by tight ends.

The Tribe's first TD came on Archer's 9-yard, first-quarter toss to senior tight end Rob Varno, who was wide open after Archer expertly sold a play-action fake to running back Jonathan Grimes. W&M's second came on an 18-yarder off Archer's bootleg to sophomore tight end Alex Gottlieb in the third period.

"To have two guys that can both get open and make plays, it's definitely some added weapons," said Archer, who was 15-of-22 for 127 yards. "It's almost too many to get all of them the ball.

"(The tight ends) did a good job today. They got open on misdirection, play-action stuff. We got (JMU) coming downhill a couple of times and got behind them or threw it around them."

Varno trails only wideout D.J. McAulay with 25 catches for 226 yards this season, and has two touchdowns. Gottlieb now has three catches for 36 yards and a score.

Then there's Chase Hill, an actual wide receiver, who has 20 catches for 305 yards, and Grimes, who, in addition to his 641 rushing yards, has 24 catches for 130 yards and a TD.

The Dukes were aware of William and Mary's weapons but couldn't stop them.

"(On Gottlieb's TD), we got caught with the bootleg, and the tight end beat us on the delay," JMU safety Vidal Nelson said. "We had practiced. It was just one of those critical errors that we had."
