OTTAWA, ONTARIO, Oct 26, 2009 (Marketwire via COMTEX) -- ELDE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Now more than ever, CAA North & East Ontario would like to remind all motorists to keep their eyes on the road, as Ontario's ban on the use of hand held electronic devices while driving takes effect today. The province joins Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in the ban that seeks to limit driver distractions and reduce collisions.

"CAA has always advocated for distracted driving legislation and is happy to see this new law come into affect," said Korey Kennedy, CAANEO's Manager of Public & Government Affairs. "Our Members have been raising safety concerns about the use of hand held cell phones and other communication devices while driving for years and we are glad to see the Ontario government taking tangible steps to put an end to these dangerous distractions."

In Ottawa, between 2006 and 2008 there were a total of 5,490 collisions caused by driver inattention, resulting in eight fatalities and 1,938 injuries.

In Ontario, while the overall number of collisions dropped between 2000 and 2006, crashes caused by driver distraction increased more than 20 per cent during that time. Distracted driving is the second leading cause of fatal crashes, after drunk driving, but it has resulted in 10 times more injuries.

Remember, when driving a vehicle, road safety is your first responsibility. The following are some tips to help reduce driver distraction:

- Put your phone on voicemail before entering your vehicle. Return calls when you are parked.

- Plan for a safe location to stop (for example a rest stop or commuter lot) to make and receive calls or have passengers take calls.

- Never, ever tweet, text or respond to emails while driving.

- Program radio stations in your car stereo.

- Never engage in stressful or emotional conversations while driving

Minimizing distractions can prevent accidents and save lives. By staying alert and focusing their attention on driving, motorists can do their part in ensuring the safety and well being of themselves, their passengers and all Canadian road-users.

For over 100 years, the Canadian Automobile Association has provided Travel, Emergency Road Services, Insurance, and Advocacy for its Members. CAA North & East Ontario continues to be the leading membership organization by recognizing and promoting its heritage and integrity in the community, while maximizing Members' value.
