Weight Watchers International Inc. said its suit, filed in federal court in New York City, concerns Curves's 30-Day Diet Plan advertisement on cable television, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
In the ad, an overweight woman approaches a Weight Watchers storefront. A van drives up, and three other overweight women say to her: "Weight Watchers? Oh, no, girl! You're going to try something new!"
The three then pull the first woman into the van to take her to a Curves a few doors away.
The woman then registers at Curves for its "clinically proven" diet plan "without counting points forever." Weight Watchers seems to take that as criticism of its calorie-counting program and apparently considers the ad's portrayal of Weight Watchers objectionable.
Curves spokeswoman Becky Frusher said the company was unaware of the suit having been filed, and would begin reviewing it.
