Roberts isn't sure if being the 2007 Charles Schwab Cup season champion will help him win this year's title. But at least he's put himself in a similar position.
Going into this week's Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Sonoma Golf Club -- the final Champions Tour event of the season -- Roberts has a 165-point lead over Funk. Two years ago, Roberts had a 165-point lead over Jay Haas and wound up winning the title, and the accompanying $1 million annuity, after neither player was able to finish in the top 10 in Sonoma to score points.
"I'm sure I'm going to probably look at the (leader board) a little bit more than I want to admit, but I'll just try to go out and play one day at a time," Roberts said.
Roberts has taken the lead in this year's Schwab Cup season championship after a spectacular second-half run in which he finished in the top 10 in seven consecutive events. Along with his wins at the Senior British Open and Boeing Classic, Roberts finished tied for fourth at the U.S. Senior Open and tied for third at the Senior Players Championship.
Roberts credits a monthlong break from competitive golf, something he planned at the start of the
season, for his second-half success. After he finished 18th at the Triton Financial Classic in early June, Roberts didn't play in another event until the PGA Tour's U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee in mid-July, where he tied for 30th.
"I think he was just in a little mental rut maybe, and it was probably the best thing he could have done," said Haas, the Schwab Cup champion in 2006 and 2008.
A week after Milwaukee, Roberts carded four birdies over the final nine holes of his closing round at Sunningdale to join Funk and McNulty in a playoff, which Roberts won on the third extra hole.
"It's something I've never done, and I decided I wanted to do it." Roberts, 54, said of the monthlong break. "It really helped me get re-energized about the game. I spent some time working on my golf swing, made a couple of adjustments. It really just recharged my batteries.
"I felt like I was starting the year all over again."
Funk and Bernhard Langer still can win the season championship, regardless of what Roberts does, if they win this week's tournament. Haas can win his second straight Schwab Cup if he wins the tournament and Roberts and Funk finish outside the top three.
Regardless, Roberts has to like his chances. He's finished in the top five in three of his four visits to Sonoma, including a fourth-place result last year.
"You need to be playing well, and you need to be comfortable with what you're doing," Roberts said. "Let's just say I'm hoping to draw from that form earlier this year."
