The Mbeya regional commissioner, Mr John Mwakipesile, told reporters yesterday that the President was fulfilling a promise he made last year to return and finish his tour. He made the promise after cutting short his visit in October last year.
This time around he is scheduled to visit Kamsamba ward in Mbozi District which, according to records, has never been visited by any national leader since 1981 when former President Julius Nyerere visited it.
The ward faces a number of problems, including poor infrastructure. This has made its residents, who are mostly farmers, lack market information for their crops such as maize, rice and sorghum.
Mr Mwakipesile said at Kamsamba President Kikwete would visit a granary and later address a public rally.
"People in the area are eagerly waiting for their national leader. Apart from their regional commissioner, they have never seen any top government leader, including a head of state, for 29 years now," said Mr Mwakipesile.
The President will also visit Ilembo and Isuto wards in Mbeya rural district where he will inaugurate a health centre and girls' hostel, apart from addressing a public rally.
President Kikwete will arrive in Mbeya from Iringa and will be received at Kikondo village in Mbeya rural district. He will then begin a tour of the remaining parts of the region. He is scheduled to open an orphanage in Rungwe east constituency.
Meanwhile, Mr Mwakipesile said on the day that the President will be concluding his tour, his wife, Mama Salma Kikwete, will also begin a four-day tour of the region.
She is scheduled to visit Mbarali and Chunya districts as well as Mbeya city. During the tour she will hold talks with various women's groups and see a number of girls schools.
