PowerRating -- 10/28/2009 - Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:VRTX) said Wednesday that its hepatitis C treatment telaprevir created an immune system response to the virus in patients who had no response to other drugs. The results came from a midstage trial of the drug with 94 patients where the virus levels were undetectable in 90% of the relapsed group and 55% of the partial responders after 24 or 48 weeks of treatment. Sustained virolgic responses, or undetectable virus levels, is the main goal of hepatitis C treatment. Also in the study, four nonresponders, five partial responders, and one prior relapser experienced a new relapse during the study. Eight patients had bad reactions to telprevir and left the study.
