The nation's largest and most advanced WiFi network in the country by geographic coverage, Optimum WiFi spans many thousands of access points across the company's New York, New Jersey and Connecticut service areas. Optimum WiFi is also broadly available on hundreds of commuter rail platforms and station parking lots across New Jersey Transit, Metro North, and the Long Island Railroad. Earlier this week, Cablevision also announced a large-scale indoor deployment of Optimum WiFi in New York City's Madison Square Garden complex.
"In little more than a year, Cablevision has done something truly extraordinary. Through the deployment of Optimum WiFi, we have made fast and free wireless Internet access available to our customers across our service area, in the places where they are most likely to use it, at a time when demands for data on wireless devices are exploding," said Kevin Curran, Cablevision's senior vice president of wireless product development. "The value and convenience we are delivering today through Optimum WiFi is exceeded only by the potential of the network to transform how our customers interact with all of our digital services in the future."
Since its launch in September of 2008, Optimum Online customers have accessed the Internet more than five million times for free over Optimum WiFi, and are averaging more than two million minutes online every day over the network, which delivers speeds of up to 3.0 Mbps downstream. Additional information and detailed coverage maps are available at http://www.optimumwifi.com.
Current Optimum Online customers can access Optimum WiFi using laptop computers and portable WiFi-enabled devices like the iPhone(TM), iPod(R) touch and BlackBerry smartphones. Consumer electronic manufacturers have embraced WiFi technology, with more than 5,000 different types of devices currently available in the marketplace that are certified to operate over WiFi. At a recent developers conference, Apple(R) reported that it has sold more than 40 million WiFi-enabled iPhones and iPods thus far. Some BlackBerry smartphones such as the Curve, Bold, and Pearl can operate over WiFi with cellular service providers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Verizon Wireless currently blocks WiFi on most of its customers' smartphones, making it impossible for these customers to take advantage of the speed and convenience of broadly available WiFi.
Optimum Online customers using devices that are enabled with WiFi - the same wireless Internet standard more than half of Cablevision's Optimum Online customers use at home through wireless broadband routers - can access Optimum WiFi through a simple sign-on screen, where the customer logs in by entering their Optimum User ID and password.
