A phishing scam is hitting banks all over the country, said Joe Vich, president of Community National Bank in Waterloo.
On Tuesday, the FDIC Tuesday alerted member institutions nationwide, warning them that customers had received e-mails appearing to come from the federal agency, requesting that recipients download and open a "personal FDIC insurance file" to check their deposit insurance coverage.
The agency warned all member institutions that those e-mail messages were fraudulent and were not sent by the FDIC.
The e-mails ask recipients to "visit the official FDIC Web site" by clicking on a hyperlink provided, which appears to be related to the FDIC and directs recipients to a fraudulent Web site. The Web site includes hyperlinks that appear to open forms. However, it is believed that clicking on the hyperlinks will cause an unknown executable file to be downloaded. The FDIC said it was attempting to identify the source of the e-mails and disrupt the transmission.
"I don't really know how many customers have received it," Vich said. "It's widespread; I do know that. We're aware that even since (FDIC officials) sent out their message, another one popped up."
Vich said "at least two" of Community National's customers had received the scam messages.
"The key message we have is that consumers should never respond to e-mails requesting personal and confidential information," Vich said. "These phishing scams continue to get more and more sophisticated, and they're seeking to steal identities."
Vich said financial institutions, the FDIC "or any reputable organization" would never ask for confidential information over the telephone or by e-mail.
Vich said anyone who receives this kind of e-mail should contact his or her financial institution.
