DALLAS, Oct 29, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- ACS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The lingering recession is exposing disproportionate unemployment levels on a largely overlooked demographic group -- the disabled, according to an advocate for persons with disabilities. Mark Boxer, senior vice president of global technology services for Affiliated Computer Services (NYSE: ACS), will deliver the keynote address today discussing the unique contributions of persons with disabilities at the Assistive Technology Industry Association Chicago Leadership Conference, in Schaumburg, Illinois.

With the availability of assistive technologies and workplace accommodations, creating employment opportunities for the disabled makes good business sense, which is the theme of Boxer's address. Boxer will profile several associates who are part of ACS' employee base and who are making an impact when matched with the right opportunity.

"These associates are dedicated, highly motivated and have a strong work ethic and they inspire my ACS colleagues and me every single day," said Boxer. "Only 38 percent of persons with disabilities are employed, yet they are part of a large, well-educated talent pool of people who can make a difference when given the chance to contribute to their fullest potential."

Boxer says inconsistent business barriers continue to circulate throughout some sectors of corporate America, including a myth that employing persons with disabilities comes with inherent additional costs associated with their employment.

"That's a myth," said Boxer. "Don't get scared off by the myth of accommodation. Reasonable accommodation is far less than many people think."

ACS is committed to employing persons with disabilities and has hired more than 200 people throughout the U.S. since the inception of a dedicated recruiting program in 2008. These employees include a full time customer service representative who is blind and uses a special text recognition system when interacting with callers; and a call center agent who is using a modified keyboard after suffering a mild stroke.

Boxer is a recognized advocate for advancing the employment of persons with disabilities and providing accessible workplace technologies. He is a recipient of the prestigious Tony Coelho Award highlighting his commitment and efforts to influence other CEOs, and a recipient of the American Association of People with Disabilities "Justice for All" Award.
