PowerRating -- Planning and International Cooperation Minister Suhair Al-Ali on Wednesday discussed with a delegation from the French Agency for Development (AFD) scopes of boosting bilateral cooperation. According to a press statement, Al-Ali highlighted during the meeting the distinguished relations between the two countries, and the role of the French government in supporting the development process and several priority projects, particularly the water, energy, environment, local development and municipal sectors. She valued the agency's support, which amounted to approximately 240 million euros in the form of soft loans and grants. The minister briefed the delegation, headed by AFD Secretary General Anne Paugam, on the challenges facing the national economy in light of current global financial crisis. The press release indicated that talks covered progress regarding a loan from AFD to cover the government contribution in the Disi Water Conveyance Project, as well as funding for the project through the agency's private sector window (Proparco) and opportunities to encourage the private sector's participation in the project. The ministry has provided concessional financing through AFD in 2008 to two microfinancing enterprises in the value of three million euros, in addition to seven million euros provided to Societe Generale Bank to support three microfinance enterprises.
