TUPELO, Oct 29, 2009 (Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- RI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Ulta, the first mega beauty store in Northeast Mississippi, celebrates its grand opening Friday at 9 a.m.

A national beauty retailer with more than 300 stores, Ulta had a soft opening Monday at its store inside The Mall at Barnes Crossing. The retailer is next to Varsity Grille, a restaurant that opened earlier this month in the former Ruby Tuesday location.

Ulta has 45 employees at its Tupelo store, according to general manager Melissa Taylor. After the holidays, the number will drop to 20 or 25.

The store has more than 21,000 prestige and mass beauty products across the categories of cosmetics, fragrance, haircare, skin care, bath and body products and salon styling tools, as well as salon hair care products.

The 10,000-square-foot store also has a full-service salon.

"It's just a one-stop shop for women to get their hair done, get a facial and get a makeup application," Taylor said.

For grand opening weekend, Ulta is giving away goodie bags of samples until they run out. The freebies are at the registers, but a purchase is not required.

Employees also will do free makeup applications for customers this weekend, Taylor said.

In addition, Ulta is offering a scholarship program for high school girls within 10 miles of the store. Senior girls can apply at the store for a $2,500 scholarship, which will be awarded based on academic achievements, community involvement, leadership qualities and commitment to continuing their education.

As part of the same scholarship program, customers during opening weekend will vote on a high school. The high school with the most votes wins makeovers for all the senior girls.
