The Lake Forest, Ill., company that sells boats, marine engines, fitness equipment and bowling and billiards games, said it had $665.8 million in sales in the quarter ended Oct. 3, down 36% from the same period in 2008. Sales in the marine-engine segment were down 29%, to $363.5 million, while sales in the boating division sank 62% to $118.2 million from $314.2 million in the third quarter of 2008. In a news release, Brunswick said Mercury Marine's factories continued to cut production and take furloughs in the quarter in response to the slow sales. The company also said higher bad debt had an adverse effect on operating earnings in the marine-engine segment, partially offset by Mercury Marine's expense reductions.
