The joint-powers Inland Valley Development Agency voted Wednesday to approve a memorandum, calling for it to join the San Bernardino Associated Governments and the Southern California Association of Governments to pay for a two-year study.
Total projected cost for the analysis will be $500,000. The memorandum calls for the Association of Governments to contribute $250,000, with the remainder to be split between SANBAG and the Inland Valley agency. Authorities will examine potential alternatives such as Metrolink rail, commuter rail and aerial tramways.
Inland Valley development leaders would like to see some of the ski resort town's thousands of yearly visitors eventually come through the San Bernardino airport, where they could then use new modes of transit to reach the mountain resorts.
The airport is located on land once occupied by Norton Air Force Base, which closed in 1994. It has not yet landed its first passenger airline.
San Bernardino Mayor Pat Morris, who co-chairs the Inland development authority, said the regional planning agencies want to find alternatives to existing mountain roads, which are often in disrepair and congested during peak tourist seasons.
Officials said the idea of studying alternate ways to access Big Bear Lake was rejected by the town in 1996.
But Bill Young, mayor pro tem of Big Bear Lake, said Wednesday that local officials have warmed to the idea of alternate modes as local ski resorts have gained popularity -- in some years attracting 250,000 visitors between Christmas and New Year's Day.
"We're becoming a year-round tourist community," Young told the Inland agency board.
