Interoperability is a step in making EPON scalable for network operators, giving them the flexibility to choose any vendor's application-specific or best-of-breed ONTs whether it is from Alloptic or based around PMC-Sierra or Teknovus chipsets. Alloptic said this capability is unmatched when paired with Alloptic RFoG solutions, allowing the network operator choice in both DOCSIS and EPON customer premise equipment.
Interoperability of ONTs via a common OLT allows the network operator to support a variety of applications and customer segments over a common infrastructure. Multiple vendors can create ONTs for specific market requirements giving network operators tailored ONT solutions. Leveraging the Alloptic edge10 OLT allows those different ONTs to be deployed on a common fiber infrastructure, even on the same PON.
"Alloptic continues to push technology forward, driving paradigm shifts in how to deploy FTTx solutions," said Shane Eleniak, Executive VP of Marketing and Business Development at Alloptic. "It has been great to work with PMC-Sierra and Teknovus in bringing interoperability to market and pushing the status quo in EPON developments."
"PMC-Sierra has always focused on delivering fully standard-compliant products in every FTTH market in which we operate," said Raphael Sankar, VP and co-General Manager for PMC-Sierra's FTTH division. "This Alloptic initiative demonstrates a fully interoperable EPON system that is ready for the mass MSO market without using proprietary methods that limit availability and increase cost."
