More than a dozen business representatives attended the seminar Thursday to hear about services offered by OnDemand Energy Solutions of Moon Twp.
"Energy is going to be a big issue for our members," said Patricia Blaum, Southern Wayne Regional Chamber of Commerce executive director.
Facing on average a 30- to 35-percent increase in electricity costs, 96 organizations from throughout the state have joined the company's program, including chambers of commerce in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, OnDemand senior energy adviser David Skiles said.
"Our electrical bill is about $6,000 a month now, and if rates increase by 30 percent, we'll be paying about an extra $2,000 a month," Honesdale Borough Council President Ed Langendoerfer said. "If we can save money, we have try to do it."
Expecting to receive about $10,000 less in funding thanks to cuts in the state's 2010 budget, the Wayne County Historical Society hopes to cut back on its largest expense -- energy.
"We have to take advantage in any area we can save," Executive Director Sally Talaga said.
Rising energy costs may also make Northeast Pennsylvania less competitive in attracting industry than other areas, including New York City, said Troy Bystrom, a partner in IM 1 Design in Lackawaxen Twp.
Mr. Bystrom said New York and other metropolitan areas have a competitive edge in hosting Internet-related businesses because of less costly bandwidth rates.
"If the cost of power goes up, it makes it less viable to conduct an Internet-based business in Northeast Pennsylvania," Mr. Bystrom said.
Wayne County's commerce chambers began to work with OnDemand six months ago.
Thursday was the first seminar hosted by all of Wayne County's chambers. And more seminars may be held, Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Donna LaBar said.
