Dr. Chajut will discuss the Company's development of microRNA-based technologies with a particular emphasis on the extraction of microRNAs from body fluids, especially serum and the progress in using microRNAs as biomarkers for the early detection of cancer will be discussed. Dr. Chajut will provide an update on the Company's efforts to develop a serum-based colon cancer screening. This update includes a discussion of the program and results to date.
"Although we have a commercial product using tissue biopsy called miRview(TM) mets that can identify as many as 25 cancer types, our work with the colon cancer project is meant to identify colon cancer alone. The identified microRNA potential biomarkers were recognized on serum samples obtained from colon cancer patients only, in comparison to samples derived from control individuals. Our first set of 128 samples yielded preliminary results with 91% sensitivity and 72% specificity, while our second set of 138 samples, resulted in 85% sensitivity and 70% specificity using a different pair of microRNA biomarkers. We continue to gather additional samples for validation, and also are reviewing the behavior of microRNAs in healthy individuals compared with colon cancer patients," Dr. Chajut said.
Rosetta points out that the colon cancer serum project is still in the early stage of development, and the company can provide no assurance that it will be successful in developing this product in its intended timeframe, or at all. In addition, Rosetta can provide no assurance that any final product will effectively differentiate colon cancer patients from patients with other cancers.
