Massey Settles Discrimination Case For $8.75 Million, Rehires Miners (MEE)

PowerRating -- 10/30/2009 - Massey Energy Co. (NYSE:MEE) has settled an age discrimination lawsuit after the company bought a bankrupt West Virginia mine and allegedly did not rehire 200 miners because of their age. Fayette County Circuit Judge Paul Blake Jr. approved the settlement on Friday for $8.75 million. It covers 229 miners, including 82 union miners that the company been ordered to rehire. The 82 miners in the union will be paid $38,000 and the remaining miners will receive $19,000.
