EKU returns three starters from last year's squad, which finished 18-13 and had 10 conference wins. The Colonels added incoming freshman Willie Cruz and junior college transfer Spencer Perrin to their roster. They are moving on without second all-time leading scorer Mike Rose, Ryan Wiersma and Deveyon Hunter.
However, as EKU coach Jeff Neubauer said, the preseason rankings have had very little effect on the final standings during his tenure as Colonel coach. His 2008 OVC championship squad was picked eighth in preseason. The 2006 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, which was coached by Travis Ford, was predicted to finish sixth.
"I think our guys understand that the preseason predictions mean very little," Neubauer said. "It really doesn't mean much. We do know we have to prepare every day to try to win an OVC title and it depends on how we develop between now and February and March, when it's all on the line."
Junior guard Justin Stommes was named to the preseason all-conference team. He averaged 10.1 points and three boards per game last season, and started 27 games. Stommes is one of just three starters to return from last season.
Stommes, a native of Cold Spring, Minn., finished fourth in the conference in three-point shooting (41.9 percent) and first on the team in free throw shooting (82 percent) as a sophomore. He reached double figures in scoring, including five out of the final seven games, while shooting 49 percent from the floor.
Morehead State and Murray State each received 10 first-place votes and were picked as co-favorites for the 2009-10 season. Morehead State finished last season 12-6 in league play (fourth place) and went on to win the OVC tournament championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Murray State was tied for second overall last season with a 13-5 record and lost in the OVC tournament semifinals. It marks just the third time since 1980-81, when preseason polls were first available, that co-favorites have been picked in the preseason poll (1991-92 and 1994-95).
"I think it will be a good year for the OVC," Neubauer said. "Last year, we had five very good teams. Last year was by far the strongest the OVC's been since I've been here at EKU. I do think Murray and Morehead both deserve the credit, they are the two best defensive teams in our conference and they deserve to be the top picks."
The Colonels open the 2009-10 schedule on Nov. 14 at home against West Virginia Wesleyan.
