Gregory Shea, president of RIM Greater China, said that RIM's purpose in the Chinese market is not to simply sell products, but also to establish partnerships with local telecom operators.
To satisfy customers' mobile entertainment demands, RIM purchased Torch Mobile, the manufacturer of Iris Browser, in order to update its browser functions. Besides, the handset manufacturer plans to introduce more Blackberry mobile phone models to China, with trendy new functions such as touch screens and handwriting recognition, and install new services including fashion and entertainment, social networking software, and instant messaging.
Industrial insiders held that the two companies' cooperation is a win-win solution. That is, China Telecom needs globally recognized products like Blackberry to help promote its new 3G communications services, and RIM gains another channel to develop corporate clients and individual customers.
