Nov 02, 2009 (The Orlando Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- TOY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Temporary stores have been popping up in Central Florida, and now they're here for the holidays.

Toys "R" Us has announced it has a Holiday Express pop-up store open at Orlando Premium Outlets for the Christmas season.

Toys "R" Us plans to open about 340 Holiday Express stores around the country. Most are within Babies "R" Us stores. About 80 are temporary "pop-up" stores, standing on their own, similar to those at Orlando Premium Outlets.

Toys "R" Us expects to close its pop-up stores in mid-January. Customers can make returns and exchanges after that in other Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores.

Meanwhile, Calendar Club has started its traditional holiday appearance in malls as well, opening stores in Altamonte Mall and Oviedo Marketplace. See's Candies and Brookstone will open holiday locations in Altamonte Mall, too. And Hickory Farms will have a holiday kiosk in Orlando Fashion Square.

Cottage Industry Co-op--a gift boutique on Edgewater Drive in College Park that features locally handcrafted goods--has undergone a change in name and ownership. The shop now goes by the name Artistree Co-op. Local jewelry designer Elena Kegler and potter Lynne Martin have purchased the shop from founders Brad and Christina Cowherd, who still own the adjoining Infusion Tea cafe.

Downtown goes high-tech

Orlando's Downtown Development Board is aggressively marketing its retailers online. The organization last month unveiled an interactive Web site, DowntownOrlando.com, where visitors can get information on retailers and post comments. Followers of the board's Twitter account, DWNTWN_ORLANDO, can learn of discounts, and the group also has an active Facebook page, facebook.com/DowntownOrlando.

Openings

A new Orlando Aldi will officially open to the public today at 4607 S. Orange Blossom Trail. Aldi, a discount grocer that sells mostly store-brand items, entered the Central Florida market last year.

DeLand-based Boston Coffeehouse will open this month in Sanford's Seminole Towne Center. The coffeehouse also has locations in Orange City and Waterford Lakes.

Small mall shops closed

A couple of small, mall-based retailers have closed their last Central Florida locations.

Hypnoses boutique has closed at Orlando Fashion Square. It was the last store open for the small clothing retailer, according to its Web site. Hypnoses also closed at Oviedo Marketplace several months ago.

Meanwhile, XLR8 closed last week at Florida Mall. The skate shop had closed several other locations in Central Florida malls. A manager at the Florida Mall store said XLR8 is going out of business and closing its other remaining store in Ocala.

Walmart unveils new store design

The Walmart at 200 S. S.R. 434 in Altamonte Springs officially unveiled its new store design last month. The three-month remodeling project has resulted in a new layout, wider aisles with no product displays, low-profile shelving, bright interior paint scheme, enhanced lighting and easy-to-read signs.

Walmart also has expanded its electronics department to include interactive displays for hi-definition Blu-ray, video gaming and portable electronics. The renovated pharmacy has a more spacious customer area.

In addition, Walmart has added a department called Celebration Station that will feature party supplies, greeting cards, balloons, cake supplies and gift wrap.
