RIM has entered into the final stage of talks with China Telecom Corporation Ltd. (NYSE: CHA and SEHK: 0728) over the introduction of the BlackBerry device into Mainland China, disclosed an executive for the Waterloo, Ontario-headquartered company, noting that specifics about the cooperation are expected to come public at the end of this year.
RIM expects to become a strategic partner of telecom carriers in the country instead of a smartphone maker, said Gregory Shea, the newly-appointed president for RIM China operation. Two years ago, the company joined hands with China Mobile Limited (SEHK: 0941 and NYSE: CHL) to roll out the BlackBerry product tailored to corporate users in the country.
Obviously, RIM is pinning its hope on a closer tie with local telecom carriers to outrun its archrival Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) in the long march, pointed out a market observer. The US-based electronics maker sees its sparkling iPhone winning increasing favor of customers in China after an introduction by China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited (NYSE: CHU, HKSE: 0762, and SHSE: 600050) weeks earlier.
It will be good to have a rival in a market, said Mr. Shea, adding that RIM will try to work out a business strategy suitable for China rather than replicate its success in Europe and North America. The hot sale of iPhone has been excited the new president, who forecasts a bright future for the BlackBerry device at the sight of the CNY 5,000-plus iPhone pricing strategy in the country.
However, Mr. Shea did not disclose the detailed RIM business strategy in the country.
"The biggest challenge RIM confronted with in China is to make more corporate users put faith in the BlackBerry wireless email solution, and to make them know that an investment in the RIM applications will bring them high return and high efficiency," said the aforesaid RIM executive, noting that the Canadian smartphone heavyweight is likely to launch its well-received email services in the country at the beginning of 2010.
In addition, the company is about to make more fascinating models of BlackBerry available in the country in the future, some of which attached with brand new services like social networking service (SNS) and instant message (IM) service.
