However, there was no loss of life or injury to any person, senior official of the refinery Moloy Barua said, adding the extent of damage was yet to be ascertained.
About 50 fire tenders of both the refinery and state fire services battled for over two hours to bring the fire under control.
The fire broke out during repair work at the Sulphur Recovery Unit around 3 pm. A loud explosion was heard with black smoke billowing out of the refinery covering more than five km radius of the area.
Barua said that during repair work usually small fire flared up, but the cause of the rapid spread of the fire this afternoon was being investigated.
