Senior Chief Aviation Support Equipment Technician (AW/SW) Donald E. Henderson and Aviation Support Equipment Technician 1st Class (AW) Darrell K. Waller were recognized as the 2009 Leadership Award winners. Ike's Leadership Development Committee (LDC) selected both individuals for the outstanding leadership they displayed throughout the year, earning them a trip to President Eisenhower's hometown sponsored by The Eisenhower Foundation.
"The leadership award affords Ike Sailors an opportunity to go to Abilene and meet the people who are closely associated with our ship's namesake, as they memorialize and celebrate an icon and statesman -- President Dwight D. Eisenhower," said Lt. Cmdr. Bryan Hager, chairman of the ship's LDC.
"Our goal is to build leadership in all ranks. We want Sailors to learn leadership insight from others' experiences at all levels," explained Hager. "It's a great deal to go out and be recognized by your peers for the strong leadership Ike Sailors are demonstrating."
The two Sailors were invited to join Merrill Eisenhower Atwater, great-grandson of President Eisenhower, for the coin toss at the football game between Kansas State University and Texas A&M University, and also stopped at Chapman Elementary School to speak to students about carrier life and what it takes to be successful in life.
In June 2008, a tornado devastated the Chapman area. As a result, students at Chapman Elementary now attend classes in temporary facilities.
"It was inspiring to see the smiles on the children's faces, given their situation," explained Henderson. "We spoke to the students about our experiences in the Navy and on board Ike."
Henderson and Waller also visited the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.
"It amazes me to see the far-reaching and continued effects that President Eisenhower has on politics and policy today," explained Henderson. "When I walked through the library, it blew my mind to see how many documents and archival records were being prepared to send to Washington for standing members of Congress to study."
"The crew could benefit more from experiences like this; it would be great for other Ike Sailors to get a chance to go to Abilene, Kansas," explained Henderson. "I learned an incredible amount about Dwight D. Eisenhower while at the library and museum."
