Bayer CropScience also could pay up to $35 million more for its RTP neighbor upon achievement of unspecified milestones. Founded in 2001, Athenix genetically engineers corn and soybeans to resist bugs and chemicals.
Bayer CropScience, a subsidiary of Germany's Bayer, announced in August that it was acquiring Athenix but didn't disclose the price. Bayer CropScience employs more than 400 at its North American headquarters in RTP.
Bayer previously said it had no plans to cut any of Athenix's 65 workers.
