The Boeing Company: Boeing Brings Wonder Of Flight To Second School
BA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and The Boeing Company today announces the Marling School, of Stroud, Gloucestershire, as the second winner of the Schools Build a Plane Challenge. The challenge will see students from Marling school and its partner schools, Stroud High, Thomas Keble, St Rose's and possibly Archway and Maidenhill schools, build, help certify and then sell a RANS S6, Coyote two seater aircraft.
The participants will be supported and mentored by Royal Aeronautical Society, Boeing and the Light Aircraft Association who will help deliver a once in a lifetime learning experience. The project brings together the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines and will also involve a broader package of visits and training related to flying.
Building work will start later this year and the school aims to have the plane completed by the end of 2010. Throughout the project the young people will be encouraged to report to and involve the wider community through presentations, blogs and video diaries. The project will also challenge the pupils commercial abilities as they will be encouraged seek local sponsorship and play a role in marketing the aircraft before its sale.
Sir Roger Bone, President of Boeing UK, commented: "Boeing places great emphasis on education and investing in skills development from an early age. We are delighted that the Marling School in Gloucestershire has been successful in its bid for the School's Build a Plane Challenge and we are confident it will be a valuable and rewarding experience."
Steve Berry, of the Marling School, said: "The UK School's Build a Plane Challenge a fantastic opportunity for us to engage pupils in the all hands-on aspects of science and technology. We are extremely pleased that Boeing and the Royal Aeronautical Society chose the Marling School and look forward to working with leading aerospace experts to help us build a fully functioning light aircraft."
Mike Steeden, President of the RAeS, remarked: "This project captures the imagination and we anticipate several thousand school children will be able to play a part in its success in the next few years. It is a challenge in many respects, but we need to inspire the next generation of engineers in order to keep the skills that are vital to the future of the economy."
Earlier this year Boeing and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) announced that Yateley School in Hampshire would be the first school to take part in the Schools Build a Plane Challenge. In partnership with Kings College, Guildford and Court Moor School, Fleet, the construction of their aircraft is well underway and there are over 100 pupils and teachers involved in the project, with pupils aged 14-18 years and local volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. The Yateley School aims to have the plane unveiled at the Farnborough International Air Show in 2010.
