SBCOE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt, Chairman of the GOP Health Care Solutions Group, will highlight a health care bill a day for the next two weeks. Blunt's Health Care Solutions are designed to improve what is working and fix what is broken in Americans' health care.

"One of the Democrats' rhetorical tricks in this debate over health care has been to argue that we can either do what the White House wants, or we can do nothing," Blunt said. "These aren't the only two choices."

Blunt has co-sponsored HR 2607, the Small Business Healthcare Fairness Act, sponsored by Congressman Sam Johnson (Texas). Johnson's bill expands access to health care coverage by creating Small Business Health Plans, which allow small businesses to band together to purchase coverage for their employees at a lower cost.

"My friend Sam Johnson has offered a plan that will work: allow small businesses that struggle with the cost of providing health care coverage for their employees the same purchasing power that large corporations and unions have," Blunt said. "The Small Business Healthcare Fairness Act meets two of our benchmarks for good health care reform policy: expanding access and fixing something that's broken."

"The American public has told us that they don't want another government bailout to fix what is broken with our healthcare system. They want us to come together, work across the aisle, in order to find solutions that expand access to affordable health coverage without breaking the bank. The Small Business Health Fairness Act will help reduce the high cost of health insurance for small businesses and uninsured working families by allowing small businesses to band together to purchase health coverage for their employees. Simple economics tells us that anytime you buy in bulk, your bargaining power increases and your costs decrease. This bill would simply apply that principle to small businesses so that they can better negotiate with insurance providers and get better deals for their employees and themselves," said Johnson.

Blunt continued: "Last week the Democrat leadership unveiled their 1,990-page government-takeover of health care. I'm taking the next two weeks to highlight a bill I'm for each day. Nothing I'm proposing is hidden in a 1,990-page bill, so let's have an honest conversation about how to make health care more affordable and accessible for everyone, regardless of pre-existing condition. Small business health plans are an important part of that equation."
