Nov 03, 2009 (The Janesville Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ACONF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Edgerton's Allyssa Ferrell finished her high school golf career on a bittersweet note.

First is the sweet for the Crimson Tide senior.

Ferrell has been named the 2009 Player of the Year by the Wisconsin High School Golf Coaches Association. She also is a first-team all-state selection for the third straight year.

"It's very surprising," Ferrell said of being named Player of the Year. "I had no idea it was coming. It's an overwhelming honor to be recognized like that.'

Meanwhile, Janesville Parker seniors Molly Rozeboom and Katie Brossard have repeated as all-state honorable-mention selections. They led this year's team to the school's first WIAA state tournament berth.

"They are the most decorated players to come through the girls program," said Parker coach John Zimmerman, who announced his retirement after the season. "They both worked hard in the summer and played in plenty of summer tournaments.'

Milton's Ashton Stair, who shared the Division 1 lead after the first round of the state tournament, has earned second-team recognition, and Madison Edgewood's C.J. Enriquez of Janesville has received honorable mention.

Ferrell qualified for the Division 1 or 2 state tournaments all four years of her varsity

career and never finished lower than fourth.

Ferrell was third in the Division 2 tournament this season with a 75-75--150 at University Ridge in Madison. She also repeated as a conference champion and as champion of the Parker Invitational.

While finishing third at state and accepting a golf scholarship to Michigan State University were 2009 highlights, Ferrell's also has a special memory from her last high school season.

"This year, I got to play with my sister," Ferrell said of her relationship with Brooke, a freshman, who finished fifth in the state tournament. "It was really neat to play with her.'

And that's the bitter.

"It's one of the hardest things about this year," Allyssa said. "I only got one year to play with her, and it made this year even harder to let go."

Brooke's 81-76--157 total combined with Allyssa's 150 in leading Edgerton's team to second place in its first state appearance. Emma Stolen, Megan Dorn and Brianne Lintvedt rounded out the Tide's state team.

"Allyssa and Brooke are just nuts on the time they put in on their golf," Edgerton coach Steve Zartman said. "These girls love to practice as much as play."

Brooke's hard work was rewarded with a spot on the all-state third team.

Allyssa began her high school career as part of a Cambridge/Edgerton co-op team her freshman and sophomore years before the Crimson Tide had its own program.

As a freshman in 2006, Ferrell qualified for the Division 1 state tournament and finished third with a 77-77--154. She tied for third in Division 2 as a sophomore with a 77-75--152 and was fourth in Division 1 as a junior with a 74-80--154.

"There are a few holes I'd like back," Ferrell said of her state appearances. "I didn't play as well as I'd liked to, but they were all solid rounds, so it's hard to be upset.'

While Ferrell obviously would like to have won a state championship, she said she is at peace with herself.

"It doesn't bother me as much as it used to," Ferrell said. "I've played in the Public Links and the U.S. Amateur, and now I'm moving on to Michigan State to begin another chapter in my life.'

And that surely offers a sweet taste for the future.
