The 90-minute documentary, produced by local filmmaker Emme Tomimbang, charts the course of the sakada -- the first generation of Filipinos to travel here to find work in the plantation fields -- as well as the lives of subsequent generations. The work involves more than 50 interviews and many historic photographs.
Tomimbang is traveling to the Philippines to speak at the premiere, along with a number of other Islanders who appeared in the documentary. The work was written and produced by Pepi Nieva, a native of Manila who now lives on O'ahu.
