With its recent purchase of midsize U.S. drugmaker Sepracor Inc., the Japanese pharmaceutical firm is erecting a structure that can help expand operations in the U.S. and the rest of the world and reduce its heavy reliance on the Japanese market.
In particular, Dainippon Sumitomo sees forging close ties with the U.S. company as a necessary step toward building an organization that can sell the schizophrenia drug Lurasidone. To that end, it has relocated its office promoting Lurasidone sales to the overseas business division.
The new division will also have departments overseeing operations in Asia and Oceania, as well as Europe and the U.S. It will be able to integrate drug development and sales activities abroad.
