Nov 02, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- MCLS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), one of the major pubic sector hospitals of the Capital is being run without a full time Executive Director for the last more than six months.

The bureaucratic tug-of-war inside the Health Ministry over the appointment of the ED has created numerous problems for the patients who are the major sufferers in the whole affair. To oblige their blue-eyed boys the Health Ministry is appointing ED on temporary basis. As the tenure of the last executive director expired thrice a time, two officials within the hospital were handed over the charge on acting basis.

Soon after Dr Majeed Rajputs contract expired Dr Altaf Hussain Deputy Executive Director Children Hospital was given the charge, after a few months Dr Mahmood Jamal was appointed acting head of PIMS but again the charge was handed over to Dr Altaf Hussain.

According to the hospital sources the Ministry of Health after awakening from deep slumber moved a summary a couple of day ago to the Prime Minister. The list contains names of Neurologist Dr Khaleeq-u-Zamaan, head of the gynaecology department Dr Ghazala Mehmood, head of the pathology department Dr Anawar-ul-Haq and Dr Abid Frooqi Joint Executive Director.

It is worth-mentioning here that all the nominees are within the hospital as keeping in mind the previous hue and cry raised over the appointment of the head of the newly established cardiology centre, which was not a PIMS employee, this time the Ministry decided to appoint ED within PIMS. However, Dr Altaf Hussain working as acting ED is not included in the said list.

Only in the presence of a head appointed for a well-defined time period, things can go smoothly, whereas when the head is appointed on short-term basis, it badly affects hospitals performance the official continued. Secretary Health had also assured to appoint the ED on priority basis but so far, no move has been taken place in that direction, he added.

Whereas the unnecessary delay over the appointment has put the administration in a fix, a number of matters linked with the decision of full time head have been pending since long. Online adds: Health Ministry has sent four names to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani for the post of Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

According to sources, the summary of the health ministry proposed the names of Dr Anwar-ul-Haq, Dr Khaliq-uz-Zaman, Dr Abid Farooq and Dr Ghazala. Sources said that after the approval by the prime minister, the executive director would be appointed on permanent basis.

It is worth to mention here that the largest hospital of the country has been without its head for the last 6 months and all important issues of the hospital facing indiscipline as the responsibilities of the ED have been assigned to junior doctors.
