Ericsson had missed two straight games with the flu, and Rafalski is the latest to feel under the weather. Kronwall said he had had a fever for about a day and a half but was feeling much better Tuesday. The Wings are being extra cautious with cases of H1N1 flu in the league. The bug had been going around the Oilers' locker room when the Wings were in Edmonton last week.
The Wings are the fifth team that Janik, 29, has played on since breaking into the NHL in 2002-03 with Buffalo. He also played for the Lightning, Stars and Canadiens.
Janik had one giveaway and played 13:56 in 18 shifts, including 2:09 on the penalty kill.
"I thought Janik was a real good call-up here tonight," said coach Mike Babcock after the Wings' 2-0 win. "I thought he did a real good job, was real stable. I thought he was good on the penalty kill. (Niklas Kronwall) took a couple penalties early, so (Janik) got that opportunity."
Janik was leading Grand Rapids defensemen with six points (one goal, five assists) in 10 games and was a team-high plus-four with 15 penalty minutes.
"He's been excellent for us," said Griffins general manager Bob McNamara. "He's obviously a guy with some NHL experience."
McNamara said Janik has been a good example for younger players on the ice and off.
Janik, who said he had offers to play in Europe, has adjusted to his role as an AHL veteran still capable of helping out in the NHL.
"I just try to play steady defense and try to help out some of the younger players down there, and I feel like I've done that so far," he said.
